SUNNY PASCAL KNOCKED on Cinde’s apartment door. She waited several seconds before using her spare key and then let herself in, entered the alarm code, and called out. “Cinde, you home yet?”

Sunny walked through the apartment. It was empty. She put the file folder she had for Cinde on the dining room table with a short note. If Sunny didn’t have to meet her boyfriend, Ted, she would have waited for Cinde. Her friend was going to be so happy with the information and paper trail she found. Another nail in the coffin of Deirdre Ella.

Sunny couldn’t wait for her friend to get justice. It was horrible how she had been treated by her stepmother. It still surprised her the inhuman things people did to one another in the name of the almighty dollar. Greed was a disgusting thing.

Propping the note against the accordion file folder, she went into the kitchen to grab a glass of juice before she left. Leaving the kitchen and walking down the hall toward the door, Sunny got a feeling of dread and the hairs on the back of her neck stood up. With a racing heart, she whirled around and came face to face with an unbelievably large, black-masked intruder.

Instinctively, Sunny opened her mouth to scream. The intruder moved too swiftly, clamping a strong hand over her mouth and crushing her lips into her teeth. Sunny immediately tasted blood.

Although she knew it was useless, Sunny struggled for her life, fighting, scratching and still attempting to scream. She was thrown against the wall like a rag doll and slammed to the floor. She was kicked in the stomach and face and then her head was stomped on until everything went black.

Sunny’s last thought was she’d never get to see Cinde get her dues. She hoped Cinde got justice and she did too ... for her murder.
